NATIVE NATURALIST: Amazon Jungle Trails + Machu Picchu

This trip takes you to the magical Amazon Jungle where you will sleep in eco-lodges, visit the Tambopata Nature Reserve, see spectacular waterfalls, experience the jungle wildlife and wake up to beautiful morning birdsong and brilliant sunsets. We end the journey in the grand Machu Picchu.

Day 0: Flight to Tambopata with connection in Lima

Day 1: Tambopata Nature Reserve – Caimán Cocha
• Airport reception and shuttle tour of Puerto Maldonado city.
• Boat ride on the Madre de Dios River hoping to see ronsocos, caimans, turtles, herons, cormorants and other animal species in their natural environment.
• Interpretive trail to the Caimán Cocha lake to observe black caiman (melanosuchus niger) and caiman (caiman crocodilus).
• Lunch/dinner at the lodge.
• Standard sustainably-built eco-lodge bungalows comfortably furnished with mosquito netting, king, double, or triple beds, and private bathrooms with showers. Amenities include a restaurant/bar, game room, botanical garden, ad pool. Upgrades to 5-star lodge available.
• 3-5 miles / 5-8 km – 3 hours.

Day 2:   Tambopata Nature Reserve – Lake Apu Víctor & Monkey Island
• Deep forest nature trail to majestic Lake Apu Víctor, with its crystal clear waters, surrounded by marshes and giant trees.
• And abundant wildlife such as parrots, macaws, toucans, camungos, shanshos, herons and other animals, such as caimans, turtles, etc., and if we are lucky, we´ll have a chance to observe the giant otter, one of the rainforest´s most spectacular animals.
• Short hike to monkey island, with its exuberant flora and widevariety of monkey species, such as maquisapas, capuchins, small lion monkeys, frailes, cotos as well as coati, sloths, and birds.
• Breakfast/lunch/dinner at the lodge.

Day 3:   Tambopata Nature Reserve – Lost Cocha
• Trail through the virgin rainforest to the Lost Cocha, a wildlife refuge and feeding ecosystem.
• Canoe ride around the lake to observe otters, caimans, turtles, tapirs, multicolored birds, the majestic jaguar, and a variety of fish species.
• Stroll through the botanical gardens or relaxing afternoon by the pool. Additional bird-watching option available upon request.
• Breakfast/lunch/dinner at the lodge.
• Standard eco-lodge bungalows. Upgrades to 5-star lodge available.
• 3-5 miles / 5-8 km – 3 hours.

Day 4:   Tambopata Nature Reserve – Gamitana/Briolo River
• Boat ride on the Madre de Dios River to the GAMITANA or BRIOLO RIVER for a refreshing swim.
• Sport fishing activities or wildlife observation on the Madre de Dios River panorama.
• Visit to a local family dedicated to agriculture within the jungle banks of Madre de Dios River.
• Breakfast/lunch/dinner at the lodge.
• Standard eco-lodge bungalows. Upgrades to 5-star lodge available.
• 3-5 miles / 5-8 km – 3 hours.

Day 5: Sacred Valley
• Transfer from lodge to Tambopata airport.
• Airport reception and private van transfer from CUZ airport to hotel.
• Awanakancha llama/alpaca ranch and textile arts center.
• Flight of the Condor at Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary.
• Chincheros textile arts center and emperor Tupac Inca Yupanqui's royal estate.
• Breakfast at the lodge.
• Hotel in Sacred Valley.
• 2.5 miles / 4 km – 2 hours.

Day 6: Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
• Authentic home-cooked meal and cultural presentations with the Willoq indigenous community.
• Hotel in Aguas Calientes.
• 2.5 miles / 4 km – 2 hours.

Day 7: Machu Picchu
• Machu Picchu Citadel
• Wayna Picchu (optional advance purchase)
• Aguas Calientes hot springs baths
• Train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.
• Private transport from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.
• Hotel in Cusco.
• 2.5 miles / 4 km – 2 hours.

Day 8: Private van transfer from Cusco hotel to CUZ airport.
