POSITION SUMMARY


The Trainee Patroller will learn the mountain and equipment functions; help in providing assistance in the effective care and evacuation of injured, sick, and lost guests; learn to patrol the mountain for our guests’ safety and skiing enjoyment; and maintain good public relations. The Trainee Patroller will require careful supervision and instruction on all assignments. He/She will follow, consistently, WPRA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

* Learn to assist in the evaluation, care, and transportation of accident and illness cases
* When at Patrol Headquarters be prepared to respond quickly to any incident on the mountain.
* Learn to perform morning trail checks (unmarked obstacles, downed flagging, check emergency phones).
* Carry out instructions from dispatcher and senior and master patrollers.
* Training as indicated by the Ski Patrol Foremen.
* Assist in general mountain safety work (tower pads, bamboo, rope, race closure, traffic control, etc.).
* Learn to fill out incident reports.
* Learn how to conduct an accident investigation.
* Learn all the facets of Ski Patrol education programs.
* Maintain personal ski equipment in good condition
* While skiing, will be under control and observe mountain safety rules as an example to the public.
* Close lifts, as necessary, being polite, but firm and tactful with the public.
* Perform trail sweep to close the mountain and clear all trails of the public, providing assistance as necessary
* Participate in skier education programs

OTHER DUTIES

* Assist in dispatching and all related activities.
* Assist base patrol coordinator and learn all related activities (once or twice per season).
* Assist in search and rescue, and lift evacuation, as needed.
* Learn to assist in avalanche control and rescue, as needed.
* Completion of Trainee/New Patroller training checklist.
* Report unsafe conditions regarding equipment and area of work, or elsewhere on the area.
* Maintain a friendly, congenial, and helpful attitude while effectively dealing with the guests and other employees.
* Maintain Winter Park cleanliness standards.
* Perform other duties as directed by Foremen or Director

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Education:

High school diploma or GED
* Outdoor Emergency Care (120 hours)
* CPR for the Professional Rescuer

Experience:

* Successful completion of Winter Park Ski Patrol Assessment Clinic.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

* Must be at least 18 years of age.
* Must be an expert skier (3 to 5 years).
* Alpine or Telemark equipment
* Avalanche rescue beacons and probes
* Use of PPE (personal protection equipment)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS


This position is five days per week and may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Mountain Environment:
* The primary physical environment in which this position works is out of doors with a high exposure level to cold, snow, wind, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
* The degree of strenuous activity within the job is considered to be high. Often lifting a weight of 60 pounds throughout the day is common.
* Additional strenuous physical activity may include skiing, walking or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment.
* Exposure to: Chemicals required for cleaning, de-greasing, and painting. Ultra Violet radiation from the sun enhanced through lack of atmospheric filtration at work altitude. Fumes produced in activities ranging from cleaning to painting. Noise generated by snowmobiles, lift equipment, and tools may require hearing and eye protection to be worn.
* Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
* Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
* Helmets worn at all times when skiing or driving snowmobiles
