Phewa Lake: The Heart of Pokhara

By StampedMoments | Mar 1, 2026
Asia > Nepal > Pokhara

Surrounded by lush green mountains, Phewa Lake is at the heart of Pokhara, one of Nepal's most vibrant cities. The second largest lake in Nepal is a sight to behold. If one side of the lake is flanked by a modern city, the other side, in stark contrast, is serene with deep green forests. Our October 2025 trip to Pokhara is as much memorable for its cultural extravagance as the natural beauty of Phewa lake. Here's an account of our experience with tips for a nice trip.

Pokhara – Origin of the name has a lot to do with the lakes
Pokhara is named after the word Pokhar or Pokhari. In Nepali, Hindi, Urdu, and other Indian regional languages, Pokhar/Pokhari means a small pond, tank, or lake. The Pokhara Valley has a cluster of nine lakes: Phewa, Begnas, Rupa, Khaste, Dipang, Maidi, Gunde, Neurani, and Kamal Pokhari. The name Pokhara is derived from the number of pokhars/ pokharis in the valley.
Moreover, the Lake Cluster of Pokhara Valley has been designated as a Ramsar Site — a Wetland of International Importance — since 2016 for conserving biodiversity, providing habitats for migratory birds, and offering ecological services like water purification.

Out of all these lakes, Phewa Lake is the most important natural water body in Pokhara. It is the largest lake in the Pokhara region and the second-largest lake in Nepal. It is a freshwater reservoir that supports local biodiversity, regulates the microclimate, provides livelihoods for fishermen and people associated with tourism, and serves as a center of cultural value. In a way, Phewa Lake is the main landmark and identity of Pokhara.

Stay & Lakeside Area
We stayed in Pokhara for three nights and two full days. During our stay, we booked a hotel near Phewa Lake. Lakeside Road is the main marketplace where most tourists can be seen. You will find most hotels, restaurants, cafés, fun activities, and shops here.
The road further connects to Baidam Road, which is also located in the Lakeside area. It is popular among tourists for staying and hanging out. There, you will find unique cafés and backpacker hostels.

Activities at Phewa Lake
· Morning and Evening Walk – There is a pathway along Phewa Lake where you can enjoy a morning or evening walk. We usually went for evening walks. It is a long walking trail that we couldn't even complete. Both times of the day, Phewa Lake shows its beauty in different shades and colors. Having coffee or tea while watching the sunset was our favorite activity.

· Boating – You must not miss a boat ride on Phewa Lake. I would suggest taking a morning or evening ride to see the sunrise or sunset. We chose an evening ride. At a slow pace, the ride makes you feel deeply connected to the lake.

· Prayer (Arti) – We spent sunset time at Tal Barahi Temple, and during our return journey over boat, we saw preparations for the evening arti. We asked the boatman to drop us there. It was a wonderful experience.

· Disneyland – On Baidam Road, you can easily spot the Ferris wheel. We took an evening walk along the Lakeside trail from Baidam Road and reached Pokhara Disneyland. It was a lively place with many rides. It's a very fun place. We rode the Ferris wheel and captured some beautiful pictures from the top.

· Basundhara Park & Shree Kedareshwar Temple – We couldn't visit, but if you have time, you can explore these places too. They are relatively untouched spots where locals hang out and play sports like volleyball.

· Kayaking – If you enjoy kayaking, Phewa Lake is a great place for it. The serene water with a view of the Annapurna Mountain Range definitely enhances the experience.

Conclusion
As it was our first visit to Phewa Lake, we missed many activities. I feel that the lake has much more to offer than what I have listed. It's a place where you can spend quality time with yourself and nature. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to experience its beauty.
As mentioned earlier, Phewa Lake has much more to offer, and we are definitely going back to spend more time there. In the meantime, if you are visiting, make sure to try some of the above activities and let us know your experience. If we missed something, feel free to share — it will help guide other travelers as well.
