Souvlaki, particularly the one wrapped in pita (tylichto in Greek), is a Greek staple and one of the world's most famous Greek dishes. Although souvlaki restaurants (souvlatzidika in Greek) have always existed in Athens, the number of places that serve souvlaki has grown substantially during the last two decades. Souvlaki eateries may be found in every district and suburb throughout the city. Therefore, finding the best is almost impossible. Nonetheless, in our piece, we highlight five places that provide unique wrapped souvlaki and are very popular among locals.

Lefteris o Politis
Lefteris o Politis
A few things haven't been said regarding Lefteris o Politis' souvlaki wrap. This restaurant has been serving delicious wrapped souvlaki to Athenians for over 70 years (since 1951). Lefteris has remained resilient in the Omonoia region, from when it was the hub of the city to when it was completely degraded and devalued, and now that the area is taking its first steps towards a better future. The wrap was originally made with lamb, but since the 1980s, it has been produced with a wonderful beef burger (bifteki in Greek). A well-grilled pita, a juicy burger, tomato, and onion make a unique and delicious combo. (Satovriandou 20, Omonoia - Athens)
To Prodorpion
Many Athenians believe that this modest restaurant serves the best souvlaki in downtown Athens. The meat is always freshly grilled and incredibly juicy. Here, they serve outstanding pork skewers simple or wrapped in pita and dipped in delectable tzatziki (yoghurt with cucumber and garlic). Every afternoon, the place is full with employees from local businesses and firms, and the aroma of grilled meat permeates the surrounding region. (Akadimia 52, Athens)

Tomas Kebab
Oi Gynaikes
On the busy pedestrian street of Drakou in Koukaki, this classic unnamed souvlaki restaurant, known as "The Women" (Oi Gynaikes), has been serving the same wonderful souvlaki with pita for nearly 50 years. Gyros, skewers, and burgers are produced daily in the store and expertly grilled. Pork gyros with pita, in particular, has a flavour that will transport elderly people back to the simple flavour of souvlaki in the 1980s and 1990s. today, the once-neighbourhood souvlaki restaurant has earned a devoted following throughout Athens. (Drakou 16, Koukaki)
Tomas Kebab
For many years, the Tomas kebab restaurant was a well-kept secret among the residents of Neos Kosmos, but now visitors from all over Athens come to enjoy the authentic kebab prepared by Tomas and his sons. Using old Armenian recipes, they prepare possibly the greatest kebab in town. The lamb kebab wrapped in pita with onions and tomatoes is unique, but the chicken kebab with yoghurt sauce is definitely worth checking out. (Mitrou Sarkoudinou 49, Neos Kosmos)

Peas Vegan
Peas Vegan & Raw Food
This is by far the best vegan street food spot in the Koukaki neighbourhood. This little establishment, with only three or four tables and a bench, promotes a holistic notion of vegan diet and environmental stewardship. Here, you can sample delicious salads, desserts, Buddha bowls, and other foods. The finest dish here, however, is the innovative wrap made of pita and seitan gyros or mushrooms. It is a flavour experience that will persuade even the most devoted fans of the traditional meat gyro that there are alternatives worth trying. (Falirou 40, Koukaki)
Souvlaki is probably the most famous food in Greek cuisine, and you will undoubtedly find one that you enjoy in one of these eateries. There are probably more famous souvlaki restaurants in Athens, but for a genuinely authentic experience, try one of them.
