In Valencia, Abanca only charges €0.86 per €300 or €0.74 per €200. This is as of 06.10.2025.
My bank, Erste Bank Austria, did not charge a commission for withdrawing the money.

Banca March and Unicaja Rural have, since Jan 25, started charging me for withdrawals when they were previously free. (5,50€ and 2,90€ respectively). Bank Inter also charge 7€ now, not sure when that changed. These were all for 500€ withdrawals. Is there any major bank in Spain that's free anymore? Not many branches of Kutxabank around.

I agree that what was once "free" may not be. We trekked to a supposedly no-fee Deutsch Bank ATM in Valencia but got charged 5 Euros.

In Madrid, unicaja and Kuxtabank ATMs have charged me no fees withdrawing from a U.S. bank and allow withdrawals up to €1000.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY A NO ATM WITHDRAWAL FEE. As today’s experience shows. I made a€500 withdrawal at an UNICAJA ATM in Granada charge with no withdrawal fees from my UK account. But UNICAJA Banca made their money by manipulating the GBP – Euro exchange rate by making a 13.6% markup. For a withdrawal of €500 I was charged £480.51 by UNICAJA. Against the market rate for 21 January 2025, this withdrawal led to a profit of €68 for the Bank. I was warned about the 13.6% exchange rate markup, but had absolutely no idea that this translated to an extremely poor exchange rate on the transaction. because there was no indication of that this would amount to a 68 Euro dee being extracted in effect. Be warned. I will never go back to UNICAJA. Total rip off.

September 2024 usually use Deutsche bank ATMS and they free, but had a ING close to me this trip and used a few times no fee’s. From UK and using Monzo Account

I used my BA debit card at Deutsche Bank in Granada on March 20, 2024, and DB charged me 4.00 Euros for the privilege, and the conversion rate was 4% higher than using a credit card for purchases.

Hello! I tried ING in Granada and it only lets you withdraw 600 per operation. On the other hand, Unibanco lets you withdraw 1000 and without commission.

Today Thursday 25 Jan 2024. Tried ING Euronet ATM at Playa Flamenca, English option and pay in Euro's/GBP offered but wanted a 3.95 Euro fee for the privilege. Instead went to Kutxabank in Torrevieja, English option and pay in Euro's/GBP offered, no fee, checked my account later and confirmed this was the case and the day's Matercard exchange rate was charged for the transaction.

On a cruise this week. Eurocaja Caja Rural in Sagunto €6 fee to withdraw €300. I declined the substantial DCC. iberCaja in Malaga, no fee for €110. I declined the DCC which I workec out to be about 9.5% for USD (my bank in US has no fx fee and no atm fee)

27 Sep 2023 used my starling card (similar to Monzo or revolut) at a kutxabank atm and was not charged a fee. Could select to pay in euros.

This article needs serious updating since a lot of the banks mentioned now charge for ATM withdrawals using foreign debit cards instead of reading the comments to figure out what is the latest. Banca March is NOT free, I tried withdrawing Є500 but there is Є3.80 commission (so you can view this as the ATM fee charge) since it is not using the current exchange rate at time of withdrawal. Same thing with Unica Banco (see earlier comment I made). Bankiter charges Є4 and ING wont accept my Citibank card.

Única banco doesn't charge but fee and comission are built in. It automatically converts and doesn't give you the option to charge it in €.

Today is 28 September 2023. I was just at DB in Madrid and I‘m pretty sure it said €4 when I tried to use my Barclays credit card! That was quick.
I am a DB customer and so I tried with my debit card. I managed to withdraw cash without a fee.

Tried Deutsche bank in Jul, it does not have charges. But tried again in Aug, started having 3€ charges.

Thanks for this useful post - we've been staying in Arenys de Mar and Santa Susanna in the coastal Maresme county north of Barcelona. The "good banks" (those with no fees) only seem to have a presence in the county capital (Mataró) or Barcelona city itself. We settled for a Sabadell cash withdrawal on our Starling account, which has a €1.80 fee and it was easy to accept the transaction in Euro so we got the Starling exchange rate. Upshot was we got €100 for £90. BBVA wanted a fee of €7, Santander €4, Bankinter €3.95 and the awful Euronet machine £3.99 and an exchange rate of almost 1:1.

Took out $200 in Euros from a Caxia Bank in Granada. Fee was $7.00. Paid $240 USD total for the $200 Euros and was not able to get a receipt! Seems like a scam to me since they charged much more than the going exchange rate!

Just took out 250 euros on monza card from ING standalone machine in Ibiza. Gave me a choice of rubbish exchange rate of 1.03 euros to GBP or 3.95 fee. Went for the fee as lots cheaper with exchange rate of 1.14-1.15.

In Madrid, travelling from London. I wanted to use barclaycard rewards card to withdraw 100 euros. This card does not charge withdrawal fees abroad. Unicaja bank ATM lets you know that they will charge barclays bank €0.75 - not you. If not using a barclaycard rewards card, check if your card charges withdrawal fees or not.

Avoid Santander. The worst bank to withdraw especially if coming from a non-euro account. The best bank for me is Deutsche Bank.

If you have a Santander UK debit card - no fees in Spain if you use a BRANDED Santander ATM - this does NOT include the Euro Automatic Cash network machines which also offers this benefit (by arrangement with Banco Santander) to Spanish customers.
Presumably the branded ATM deal also applies to Santander customers from other countries such as the USA.
The Santander branded ATM benefit now extended to several countries that have them.

I took out 500 x 2 "Euros from Cajero Euro Automatic" in Torreviejatoday. My card was in Euro and my money in euro. However, this bank changed my euro first to SEK and then Back to Euro. Total fees 160 Euro to take out 1000 euro. It is clearly a scam attempt.

Went to Kutxabank atm yesterday and withdrew 500 Euro with my Capital One no fee bank card. Although it did not say on the atm, I was charged a withdrawal fee and what shout have been 509 dollars was 523! Don't make the same mistake I did.

Seville, May 13 2022 - Unicaja seems to be free for Euro 100 withdrawal. Did not get any message to confirm a commission charge; instead, was warned to reconfirm 3 times when declining the conversion rate offered between EUR and USD (though my debit card is from Canada).

I tried to take €500 from from a Cajamar atm in Valencia yesterday. Balked at the €6 fee and cancelled. Found out later the full €500 plus fee was charged to my account. Luckily I had the receipt that said ‘cancelled’. They corrected it today after a frantic international phone call to my bank, but it gave me a fright. Avoid Cajamar like the plague.

Because of suggestions here, I went to a nearby IberCaja to withdraw money. For 500 euros, I was charged 3.16 euros. My bank will pick up this charge. I had been dismayed at some of the other banks' rates--big charges and lousy exchange rates so I was happy to find this thread. Gracias.

In Madrid Airport, I was charged 5Euro fee from ATM. I checked all ATMS and they were all charging this much. Today I withdrew from BBVA in Tenerife because in Colombia it is no fee but here in Canary Islands I was charged a 7Euro fee for withdrawing.

If you are a regular to Spain and the Canaries - get a UK Santander Everyday current account for use at a Santander branded ATM, no fees of any kind, and the account has no strings attached like Direct Debit or minimum monthly pay in.

I find this topic is very useful for someone who is from non EU and considering to withdraw cash from Spanish ATMs before arriving Spain. This is one of the important budget planning elements. I used this website page to decide whether I should prepare more EURO cash before I arrived the country.
Today I am sharing my 2nd Sep 2021 experience from Madrid. I used UnionPay debit card from Myanmar/Burma for cash withdrawal (EURO 460) and the following are the fees shown to me on the ATM screens.
1. Santander ATM ask: 7 EURO
2. Euro Automatic Cash ATM ask: 5 EURO
3. Euronet worldwide ATM ask: 3.95 EURO
4. Sabadell ATM as: zero EURO
Today I have withdrawn 1 time each from Euronet worldwide (3.95) and Sabadell (zero). Will continue with Sabadell further onwards.

In Valencia August 2018, Santander wanted €7 to withdraw using my Revolut card. Used this page and tried IberCaja instead and they charged €0.75 which appears not to have been passed on by Revolut.

Just wanted to share my experience. Withdrew money yesterday in Palma, Mallorca from Interbank and they took 1.87€ for 40€ withdrawal. So it’s not for free! But definitely better than Santander.

Banca Marcha also wants now 2 Euro fee as well as Cajamar Cala Rutal. Only one I found so far that still doesn’t charge you is Unicaja, ING and Deutsche Bank Espana.

At the establishment of the Euro, did the E.C.B. not mandate that there would be no fees for withdrawals in Euro from regulated Banks within the E.U.? Are the currency conversion rates controlled at regulated banks in E.U.?
I use Irish debit cards in Unicaja Bank in Nerja ( Malaga ) where there are no fees to date.
If using non E.U. bank cards, the wise thing to seems to be to never direct the ATM to convert the currency but to allow your own bank make the conversion.

The above info is not accurate. I've traveled in 20+ cities in Spain in 2020 with a US debit card, and the only free ATMs I have found are:
* Bankinter
* Unicaja
* Eurocaja Rural

Bankinter charges 4 euro in Barcelona. Also, as long as you take it out in euros, you won't be charged some ridiculous conversion fee. Stay away from La Caixa, BBVA and Santander (the worst offenders).

With no option of euros. Went auto GBP.
Second transaction I've done now. If won't happen again
I will be looking at a Transferwise account, in the future.

I confirm the 2€ fee at Caixa...on the other hand, I took money from a Abanca atm, and during the transaction a message popped up stating that my bank won't charge me a fee (which is true) but Abanca would take 0.74cts...once notified on the bank app I found out Abanca had actually taken 4€ !! Fishy and tricky...

My dad has lived in Spain for 17 years, has his residentia, pays Spanish tax on his pension and has a personal bank account with BBVA. Even using another Spanish bank eg Santander which is close to his home they still want to charge him €6.00 which means at 81 he still had to drive 30 mins to his actual branch to get cash.
I’ve tried to get him to change banks but he doesn’t want the hassle or to be disloyal. Oh how u wish the banks realised what they do to the older generation 😢😢

Santander (Spain) have made an arrangement with the Spanish Post Office (Correos) so that customers can withdraw cash at Correos branches - or have cash delivered to them at home by the postman.
This was prompted by the number of small or remote Spanish communities who have no bank or ATM locally.
I suggest you get your Dad to change banks.

BBVA near Barcelona wanted to charge €6 fee to retrieve €200 from Malaysian Debit Card. I cancelled and will give feedback here when I find a better deal.

CaixaBank charged me €2 on top in Benidorm January 2020. There also probably the inly bank you feel your giving your card to a supercomputer than an ATM!

Caixa Bank charged me a 5 euro fee in Madrid when I was there a month ago. I was upset because I found a Sabadell atm with a 3.5 euro fee and better exchange rate later

Went to Caixa ATM yesterday & fee was 5 euro for 100 euro withdrawal ($7.50 CDN). Chose to continue but not with their currency conversion. Rip off but couldn't be bothered chasing another ATM as last of trip

CaixaBank Charged me 5.00 euro for a 200 euro withdrawal but I was not paying attention & chose their exchange rate margin which was 8.4% ( ouch ! ) so pay attention when using their machines

In Palma, Mallorca. Just used s stand alone ATM of Banca March. No fee for using my UK credit card to withdraw money. Any UK folks should get a Halifax Clarity credit card, put credit ON it, then use to take cash out of ATMs worldwide. Best exchange rate and no fee.

I wish I knew what part of Spain everyone else is in, but all four bank in this Catalan town where I live charge a flat fee ranging from 5-7 euros each time, plus an inflated exchange rate. Yesterday, I went to withdraw 400 euros from my American bank (MasterCard) and at Santander, they now charge 7 euros just for the transaction plus a higher exchange rate than current international rates and would have charged me $485 for my 400 euro withdrawal. It's been better with the stronger dollar but I also know Spanish banks are hiking up their fees possibly due to higher government-set bank costs. Where are the fee-less ATM?

Using UK master card 5 years , never charged in Spain/ Canaries until today....
Santander wanted €7.....Bankia about 2 and Caixa which was always free , similarly.
Can confirm Ibercaja was free ! So used in Torremolinos.

NEVER let an ATM do the converting for you!!! Withdraw in the local currency and let your bank do the conversion, they'll ALWAYS offer much better exchange rates.
