Don't confuse: Cyprus is not a Greek island

Middle East > Cyprus

So many people in the world don’t know that Cyprus is an independent country, it is not part of Greece. Some people confuse it with Crete, which is a Greek island. Let’s go into that in detail.

Cyprus declared independence in 1960

From 1925 until 1960 Cyprus was under British control. The island became an independent, sovereign state in August 1960 on the basis of the Zurich and London Agreements, following an armed liberation struggle against British colonial rule between 1955 and 1959 (see some history here).

There are Greeks and there are Cypriots, and they are not the same. Cyprus has its own beautiful flag, its own government, economy, and its own financial problems. There are two official languages in Cyprus: Greek and Turkish.

A divided island

From 1974 Cyprus is divided. There was a coup or against the local Cypriot government, which was followed by Turkish invasion and resulted in occupation of almost 37 % of the island’s territory by Turkey.

The southern part is populated mostly with Greek Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites, Russians, and other minorities. Northern Cyprus (or how they call themselves “Turkish Republic of Nothern Cyprus”) is not recognized, it is populated with Turkish Cypriots, Turks, and some minorities as well.

The border between two sides is open and you can walk from one side to another through Ledra checkpoint in Nicosia. You will need to show the Identification documents.

Differences between Cyprus and Greece

There are plenty of similarities between Cypriot and Greek culture, but let’s see what is different:

  • Dialect: People in Cyprus have their own Cypriot dialect. Most Greeks won’t understand it.
  • In Cyprus, unlike Greece, you drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Greece is in Schengen zone, Cyprus is not.
  • Cypriots call Greeks “Kalamaras”. Kalamari” means “reed” in Greek and in former times it was a quill pen. “Kalamaras” was the educated Greek who had come from Greece to fill an administrative position.
  • I find Cypriots less talkative, more straightforward than Greeks.
  • Most of the time, simply by appearance I can understand who is from Cyprus and who is from Greece before they even start talking.

To conclude, I live on this island, love it with all my heart and I want it to be known for what it is. Greek islands are magnificent, but Cyprus is not one of them

Who wrote this nonsense?

Cyprus is Greek.

Cyprus has been Greek for 3500 years.

Cyprus is one of many Greek islands that have gone through back to back invasions and occupations by turk invaders and Venetians. The only difference is those islands are free, Cyprus is not.

Rhodes was occupied by turks one century longer then Cyprus. Rhodes achieved Union (ENOSIS) with the motherland, Cyprus did not.

The British took Cyprus off the turk invaders. The Greeks fought for union with Greece as another Greek island and the British used the turks as a weapon to stop that.

1960 was a sham independence. More than 96% of the population voted for enosis but instead got told to share their island with barbaric turks who were “17% of the population” yet given the vice presidency, 40% of all security roles, 30% of all civil roles and more ridiculous privileges, to please the pseudo state of “turkey”.

There is no such thing as “turkish cypriots”.

The British created that term to harm Greek demands for freedom.

These turks were simply turks.

Any indigenous blood came from slavery, forced marriage, forced conversion to islam and the crypto Christians of Greek and Italian decent. The Italian decent is from the Venetian occupiers who had Cyprus for 82 years before turks invaded.

You will hear how “turkish cypriots” were secular, ate pork, drank alcohol, etc. That is because they were neither turkish or muslim. They hid their Christian and Greek or Italian heritage.

The British gave these crypto Christians to turks to boost their population, becoming 17%.

Cyprus is Greece. The people there speak the same language, have the same culture, food cousin etc. The only difference is their dialect.

It's not true that Greeks cannot understand the Cypriot dialect. They can miss some words, but it's not that difficult to understand the meaning. It's the same language.

Cyprus is a Greek island but half of the island was taken over by the Turkish and has been split, the smaller half which is the north part of Cyprus got taken over and the south side which is the bigger part of Cyprus is the Greek side and it doesn't change the fact that Cyprus is a Greek island
